In venting his frustration Mayor Takele Uma is exposing an ugly truth many are whispering about but none are making it public.
The ruling party has been using funds from UNDP and other international donors to pay for its social media propagandists. Many of the most dangerous hate preachers on Facebook are on the ruling party’s payroll funded by UNDP and others. I have been told the fund was initially meant to help the government attract diaspora skills and expertise needed to bolster government capabilities during the transition. However, that well intended funding has been diverted to pay for social media hate preacher. They were initially hired to target critics of the ruling party, but as the fracture within the party worsens they seem to have been directed to look inward and go after internal challengers. Recently the paid propagandists, whom many suspect are backed by state security, are also resorting to extortion threatening to wage campaign against businessmen and government officials unless they pay them or give them land. This seems to be the case with Mayor Takele.
This shameful and childish action need to stop. UNDP and other donors should scrutinize how their funds are been used. Ruling party and government officials should end this.
